Yes, you can add someone to Secret Santa after the draw without starting again. You slot the latecomer into the chain: one person gets a new match, and everyone else keeps theirs. Here's how to do it by hand, how it works on Santamigo, and what to tell the group so nobody can work anything out.
Do you have to redraw when someone joins late?
Not necessarily. A full redraw only makes sense if nobody has looked at their match yet. Once people know who they're buying for, and especially once a few have already bought something, starting over is annoying and invites questions. Everyone wonders why their person changed.
The tidiest fix changes as little as possible. You touch one link in the chain and leave the rest alone.
How do you slot a latecomer into the chain?
A Secret Santa draw makes a loop: Amy buys for Ben, Ben buys for Chloe, and so on until the last person buys for Amy. To add Dan, you break the loop in one place only.
- Pick one participant. Ideally someone who hasn't bought their present yet. Say Amy, who had Ben.
- Amy now buys for Dan. She's the only person whose match changes.
- Dan buys for Ben. He takes Amy's old match, so Ben still has someone shopping for him.
- Nobody else moves. Ben, Chloe and the rest keep exactly the same names.
Everyone still gives one present and gets one, the budget doesn't change, and only one person needs a quiet word.
What if you drew names out of a hat?
That's trickier, because nobody knows who drew whom, the organiser included. To use the method, you have to ask a volunteer privately who they picked. That volunteer and the organiser then know part of the chain. It works, but the surprise takes a small hit. If the organiser wants to play as well, it gets even more awkward, as we explain in our post on a .
Frequently asked questions
›Can you add someone to Secret Santa after names are drawn?
Yes. You slot the latecomer into the chain: one person buys for them instead of their old match, and the latecomer buys for that old match. Everyone else keeps their name.
›Do you need to redraw if someone joins late?
Only if nobody has seen their match yet. Otherwise slotting them into the chain avoids changing everything and raising suspicions.
›What happens if someone drops out after the draw?
Whoever had them takes their match instead. Only one person's match changes and the rest of the group sees no difference.
›On Santamigo, does the organiser know whose match changes?
No. When you add a latecomer or remove someone, the person affected is told without the organiser knowing who it is.
