WhatsApp Secret Santa: how to run the draw with one simple link
· 5 min read
Run a WhatsApp Secret Santa without giving the game away: post one link in the group chat, everyone joins and sees who they've drawn in private.

WhatsApp can't draw names for you, but it's still the best place to get everyone together. The easy way: set up the group on a Secret Santa site, post one invite link in the chat, let everyone join with their first name, then run the draw. Each person sees who they're buying for on their own page. Nothing shows up in the group chat, and even the organiser doesn't know who has whom.
Can you do Secret Santa inside WhatsApp itself?
Not really. The app lets you chat, run polls and create events, as WhatsApp's own page on group chats explains. What it doesn't have is any way to draw names in secret.
The usual workarounds all have a catch. If the organiser pulls names out of a hat at home and texts each one privately, they know every pair and can't really play. If someone posts the results in the group by mistake, the surprise is gone for everyone. And as soon as a couple shouldn't draw each other, you're back to redoing it by hand.
The sensible split: WhatsApp for the chat, a draw tool for the secret.
How do you run a WhatsApp Secret Santa in 4 steps?
Agree the basics in the group. The exchange date, the budget and any couples to keep apart. A quick WhatsApp poll settles the budget when people can't agree.
Set up the group on Santamigo. A name, the date and a budget if you want one. Your email is recommended so you can get your admin link back, but it isn't required. Tick "I'm taking part too" if you want to be in the draw.
Paste the invite link into the chat. Everyone taps it, joins with their first name and can fill in their wish list. No app to download and no account to create.
Run the draw. Add exclusions first if two people shouldn't draw each other. Our guide to family Secret Santa shows how. Then everyone opens their envelope to see who they're buying for, along with that person's wish list.
Frequently asked questions
›Does WhatsApp have a Secret Santa draw feature?
No. WhatsApp is for chatting and sharing the link. The draw happens on a site like Santamigo, and everyone sees who they've drawn on their own page.
›Do people need to download an app?
No. The invite link opens in the phone's browser, straight from the WhatsApp chat. Nobody creates an account.
›Can the organiser see who drew whom?
No. They can see who has joined and who has opened their draw, but never the pairs. So they can take part too.
›How many people can take part?
From 3 to 100 people for free. Beyond that, the business plan goes up to 1,000 participants, and more on request.
Ready to organise your Secret Santa?
Draw names in a minute, free and with no account. Everyone finds out who they’re giving to, in secret.
The link opens straight from the chat, on any phone.
What should you post in the WhatsApp group?
One short, complete message saves you a dozen follow-up questions. Pin it to the top of the chat so latecomers can find it. Feel free to borrow this one:
"Secret Santa time! Budget: £15. Swapping presents on Christmas Eve at Nan's. Please sign up by Sunday with this link: [link]. Add a few ideas to your wish list. And remember: lips sealed!"
Change the budget, date and place to suit your group. If anyone's new to the game, add a line about the golden rule: keep your draw to yourself until the big day.
What should never go in the group chat?
There are three kinds of link, and only one belongs in the group.
The invite link. This is the one you post in the group. It's for joining and doesn't reveal any draw.
Each participant's personal link. It leads to their own page and their draw. Treat it like a password.
The admin link. It's for managing the group. Only the organiser should have it.
Skip the screenshots of your draw too, even as a joke. Someone joined without an email and lost their link? The organiser can pass on their personal link from the organiser page, in a private message and never in the group. Everything about lost links is covered in our article on the Secret Santa generator with no email.
How do you keep the suspense going until the big day?
The classic slip is asking in the group: "Does anyone know if Jess likes tea?" Everyone instantly works out who drew Jess. On Santamigo, anonymous messaging lets you write to the person you're buying for without giving yourself away, and it's included in the free version.
The WhatsApp group can then stick to shared stuff: reminding everyone of the date, sharing the address for the party, teasing whoever still hasn't filled in their list. And if someone joins after the draw, there's no need to start again: you add them and only one person gets a new match.
What about people who hate creating accounts?
Nobody has to. A first name is enough to join, which is the whole point of an online Secret Santa with no sign-up. It works just as well for grandparents as for teenagers.
A few gifts for people who live on their phones
Since you're organising it all on WhatsApp anyway, here are three ideas for the friend who never puts their phone down.
A phone stand
around £12
Handy for following a recipe or a video call hands-free.
